Romeo and Juliet

The Globe Theatre is coming to Connecticut! From May 8–10, the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association invites audiences to travel back in time with its production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, performed in Walker Auditorium at The Hotchkiss School. Performances will take place on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Since its premiere in the 1590s, Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece has been performed thousands of times in countless styles. Why is society still so captivated by a story about a five-day relationship written more than 400 years ago? Simply put, it’s a darn good play. Full of swordfights, humor, tragedy, and some of the most beautifully written love poetry in the English language, Romeo and Juliet has something for everyone.

Hotchkiss’s production embraces the play’s many contradictions. It is a story about true love and artificial love. It is a romantic comedy and a horrific tragedy. With a script and set design inspired by the sixteenth century and a cast of actors born in the twenty-first, the production highlights the play’s striking oxymorons while bringing Shakespeare’s language to life for today’s audiences.

The production is directed by Andrew Steven Knight, instructor in English and theatre at The Hotchkiss School.

Andrew Steven Knight is a theatre artist and educator from New Hampshire who joined the Hotchkiss faculty in 2025. He holds a BA in Theatre from the University of New Hampshire and an MLitt and MFA in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin University. Knight has performed with the American Shakespeare Center, Advice to the Players, Unto These Hills, Mortal Fools Collective, and The Little Red Wagon. His play Spiders, Stories, and Science won the 2025 Anna Zornio Memorial Children’s Theatre Playwriting Award and will receive its world premiere in June 2026. Before coming to Hotchkiss, he taught at James Madison University and Mary Baldwin University. Offstage, Andrew is looking forward to marrying his fiancée, Julia, this summer, and they recently added a new family member, a puppy named Hallie.

Content Advisory: This production includes a depiction of suicide onstage and may not be suitable for all audiences.
