The Tremaine Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit of works by Ellen Moon P’08. The exhibit is on view Sept. 17 through Oct. 22, with an artist reception scheduled Sept. 17, 4-6 p.m. Visitors to the gallery must be vaccinated; wearing masks is optional.

Moon's watercolor paintings depict the landscapes of Connecticut’s Northwest Corner, especially Cornwall, where she resides. Additionally, Moon creates elaborately embroidered works in fiber and designs and builds sets, masks, and costumes for the Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater. Her work has been exhibited widely both locally and nationally and is represented in numerous private collections. The Tremaine exhibit will feature her works in watercolor and embroidery.

Describing her identity as an artist as intrinsic to her being, “...it is in my nature… A cat hunts, a bird flies—I make stuff,” Moon’s art celebrates her love of the natural world. She is inspired by what she characterizes as the beautiful but complicated landscape of Northwest CT and set the task of painting en plein air on a daily basis in all but the most extreme weather. Concurrently, her work in fiber tells the stories of the natural world: the habits of insects and what she calls “the small but miraculous one-time phenomena” that happen all around us. The challenge of translating the textures and colors of nature into fiber are fascinating to Moon’s attentive eye. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.” The work of Ellen Moon attempts to capture nature’s fleeting beauty.

The Tremaine Art Gallery is located in the Main Building the School. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.  Please call ahead before your visit to confirm opening hours. Please note visitors must be vaccinated; masks are optional. For more information about the exhibit, phone (860) 435-2591.
