The Tremaine Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Friends of Fire: Ceramic Art by Delores Coan and Hotchkiss Alumni, featuring work by longtime Hotchkiss instructor in ceramics and former students including Abigail Doan '84, Christy Johnson '86, Emily Lee '98, Mingxi Li '14, Lucy Li '11, Sandy McMillan '89, Clark Maturo '08, and John Williams '93 . The exhibit will run October 20 - December 4. A reception will be held November 5, 4 - 6 p.m.

Instructor in Ceramics Delores Coan has taught at Hotchkiss for over 35 years. In addition to her Hotchkiss post, she has taught in educational venues and programs all over the state of Connecticut. Her work is in various permanent collections, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Everson Museum in Syracuse, N.Y. Coan's passion for working with clay has brought her to many parts of the world seeking indigenous potters and their work. Most recently she has spent summers teaching in Jingdezhen, China.

This retrospective exhibit marks her last year of teaching at Hotchkiss before retiring. Coan chose to show her work along with the work of former students to highlight the central role teaching has played in her career and the lasting relationships she has forged because of it. "Teaching ceramic art has been a humbling and exhilarating part of my life," she says. "I've made lifelong links with many students through sharing the creative process. The joy I've derived from passing on this ageless art has been one of my life's greatest gifts." Coan adds, "We can all make a big difference by continuing to support art programs so that students may learn and explore varied disciplines to fulfill their artistic destiny."
