Members of the Class of 2024 received honors during the Senior Awards and Cum Laude Ceremony on May 30, the evening prior to graduation.
ATHLETIC AWARDS
SENIOR ATHLETIC AWARD: Hotchkiss watches are given to those members of the Senior Class who earn at least six varsity letters in their career at Hotchkiss, two of which must be earned in the senior year. In case of a new senior, three letters must be earned.

THE GOSS ATHLETIC AWARD is named in memory of George A. Goss Jr. '38, who made significant contributions to Hotchkiss athletics. It is awarded to the senior girl who in the opinion of the varsity coaches and Athletic Director has contributed the most to Hotchkiss athletics through their ability, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship.
This year’s recipient is Etta Coburn
THE JAMES T. BRYAN '11 ATHLETIC AWARD recognizes a great friend of Hotchkiss athletics, the late Mr. Bryan. His interest in the School spanned almost six decades and his sons, grandsons, and great-grandchildren followed him to Hotchkiss. This award is given to the senior boy who in the opinion of the varsity coaches and the Athletic Director, is an outstanding athlete and has made the greatest contribution to the School's athletic program.
This year’s recipient is Rett Zeigler.
THE ANDREW KNOX DWYER '01 AWARD is named in memory of Andrew Knox Dwyer '01, and is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who, in the opinion of the senior class and the coaches, best demonstrates a love for Hotchkiss through school spirit, enthusiasm, and loyalty to Hotchkiss athletics as both a participant and a supporter; a commitment to their teammates and schoolmates; and a love for the camaraderie that involvement in athletics brings.
This year’s recipients are Adam Wright and Julianna Piccone.
ACADEMIC AWARDS
FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS
THE JOHN HAMMOND '29 MUSIC AWARD is named in memory of John Hammond ’29, who made major contributions to music in this country. This award is given to talented and promising seniors who have shown significant growth in their abilities and have demonstrated these abilities to the Hotchkiss community, whether as instrumentalists, singers, or aspiring composers.
This year’s recipients are Sophie Elliott, Daniel Li, and Jerry Liu.
THE BRAGG VOCAL PERFORMANCE PRIZE is given in honor of Jennifer Bragg ’03, and her teacher, Ruth Lansche, and is awarded annually to that member of the Senior Class who, during their course at Hotchkiss, has shown the greatest measure of dedication to, and accomplishment in, vocal performance.
This year’s recipient is Isamar Martinez.
THE ELLEN R. TORREY DANCE AWARD was established in honor of former faculty member, Ellen R. Torrey, who directed the Hotchkiss Dance Program from 1972 to 1992, for excellence in dance.
This year’s recipient is Daniela Vasquez.
THE EDWARD K. KLINGELHOFER JR. '43 AWARD was established in memory of Edward Klingelhofer '43 and is given annually for distinguished service in the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association productions of the year.
This year’s recipient is Emilie Clitus.
THE SARAH T. CRAIG MEMORIAL PRIZE was established in memory of Sarah Craig ’95 and is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who best reflects the expertise and unselfish devotion that made Sarah so outstanding a contributor in all aspects of technical theater to the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association.
This year’s recipient is Sierra Atkins.
THE ROBERT AND SANDY HAIKO PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE was established in honor of former faculty members Robert Frank and Sandra Stephens Haiko who founded and ran the photography program at Hotchkiss between 1969 and 2011. The award recognizes excellence in photography and related media arts.
This year’s recipient is Julia Widen.
THE THOMAS P. BLAGDEN ’29 PRIZE was given by Mrs. Henry S. Lovejoy of Janesville, Wisconsin, for excellence in art. This award is named in honor of Tom Blagden, who taught art at Hotchkiss from 1936 to 1956, and is given to that member of the Senior Class who does the best creative work in art.
This year’s recipient is Jacquo Pierre.
THE HONORS ADVANCED PORTFOLIO ART PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Portfolio Art.
This year’s recipient is Grace Qi.
THE HONORS ADVANCED CERAMICS PORTFOLIO ART PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Ceramics.
This year’s recipient is Ada King.
FOR EXCELLENCE IN CLASSICAL AND MODERN LANGUAGES
THE HOEY SENIOR GREEK PRIZE was established in 1996 in honor of Allan S. Hoey, a master in Greek from 1941 to 1972 and one of the great scholars involved in secondary education. It is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Greek.
This year’s recipient is Tory Dana.
THE SENIOR LATIN PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Latin.
This year’s recipient is Tory Dana.
THE KING TAK LAM CHINESE PRIZE is given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. K.T. Lam. Mr. Lam attended boarding school from the age of 7 and was an enthusiastic advocate of this type of education. He loved and enjoyed Chinese culture and language. It was his wish that this award is given to that member of the Senior Class who excels in and shares his enthusiasm and love for the language.
This year’s recipient is Oscar Lock.
THE DAVID DEMARAY SENIOR FRENCH PRIZE is named in honor of former Hotchkiss faculty member, David Demaray, who taught at Hotchkiss from 1950 to 1991. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in French.
This year’s recipient is Jared Hurst.
THE EMERSON BIGELOW ’13 AND JOHN EMERSON BIGELOW ’44 PRIZE FOR CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH is awarded annually to that member of the Senior Class who has studied French for at least three academic years at Hotchkiss and has demonstrated the highest level of proficiency in conversational French.
This year’s recipient is Campbell Burke.
THE CHARLES E. BERRY GERMAN PRIZE is given in honor of Charles E. Berry, master of German at Hotchkiss from 1936 to 1970. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in German.
This year’s recipient is Teddy Loescher.
THE SENIOR SPANISH AWARD is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Spanish.
This year’s recipient is Ella Yu.
FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH
THE THOMAS H. CHAPPELL ’24 PRIZE was established by J. Cornell Schenck ’28 in honor of the fifth headmaster of The Hotchkiss School, who taught French from 1928 to 1932, and served as Head of School from 1955 to 1960. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in English.
This year’s recipients are Peter Berlizov and Naima Johnson.
THE TEAGLE ESSAY PRIZE is named in memory of Mr. Walter C. Teagle ’31. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who has written the best essay on a topic approved by the faculty of the English Department.
This year’s recipients are Libby Cobera and Lily Yawand-Wossen.
FOR EXCELLENCE IN HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE
THE EDWARD B. PRESTON ’79 PRIZE is presented to that member of the Senior Class who is most notable for sound scholarship and thoroughness in studies while taking Western history.
This year’s recipients are Kiera Dwan and Francesca Farman-Farmaian.
THE ECONOMICS PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in Economics.
This year’s recipient is Will McGee.
THE PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in philosophy and religion.
This year’s recipient is Zoe Bye.
THE PARSONS PRIZE was founded by Mrs. Rose Milmine Parson and is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in U.S. History.
This year’s recipient is Liam McCummings.
FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
THE GEORGE NORTON STONE SENIOR MATH PRIZE is given in memory of George Stone, who taught math at Hotchkiss from 1949 to 1986. This award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who excels in mathematics.
This year’s recipients are Will Levy and Alex Zhang.
THE SENIOR COMPUTER SCIENCE AWARD is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who excels in computer science.
This year’s recipient is Sierra Atkins.
FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE
THE ROBERT B. FLINT '23 SCIENCE PRIZE is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who has demonstrated excellence in both biological and physical sciences during their career at Hotchkiss.
This year’s recipient is Daniel Li.
THE VAN SANTVOORD '08 ENVIRONMENTAL PRIZE was named in memory of the late and distinguished fourth headmaster of Hotchkiss, George Van Santvoord '08, this award is given annually to that member of the Senior Class who has shown during the past year the strongest demonstrated concern, aptitude, and accomplishment in studying the natural environment and man's relation to it.
This year’s recipient is Nick Chang.

THE FIRST SCHOLAR PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who has achieved the highest grade point average during their senior year.

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL’S PRIZE is awarded to that member of the Senior Class who has maintained the highest average in scholarship for the last three years.

THE FRANK A. SPROLE ’38 SOCIAL SERVICE PRIZE was established by Frank A. Sprole ’38, a former president of The Hotchkiss Board of Trustees. This prize is awarded annually to those members of the Senior Class who have distinguished themselves in social service. It recognizes extraordinary commitment and constancy in serving the needs of others outside the immediate Hotchkiss community.

MAJOR SCHOOL PRIZES
THE WALTER CLEVELAND ALLEN, JR. ’32 PRIZE is awarded to those members of the Senior Class who, in the judgment of the seniors and the faculty, are most notable for honorable conduct, conscientiousness, and future promise.
This year’s recipients are Meilan Antonucci, Keira Dwan, Spencer Humes, and Rebekah Oppenheimer.
THE CENTENNIAL PRIZE is awarded to those members of the Senior Class who, in the judgment of the seniors and the faculty, have gained the respect of the community through their enthusiasm, vitality, and unselfish generosity to others.
