Film Producer Julie Parker Benello ’88 Wins an Oscar

Congratulations to producer Julie Parker Benello ’88, who, along with Jeff Reichert produced, “American Factory”, which won the Oscar for best feature documentary during the Academy Awards held Feb. 9, 2020. 

The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and is the first film picked up by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground.

The film has received countless accolades, including the Gotham Award for Best Documentary, the IDA Award for Best Director, the Cinema Eye Honors Awards for Best Director and Best Film, the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary, and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary. It was also nominated for the BAFTA for Best Documentary.

“American Factory” tells the story of a culture clash when a Chinese company opens an automotive glass factory in a shuttered Ohio General Motors assembly plant. 

Benello is the founder and producer of San Francisco-based Secret Sauce Media, her latest venture to produce and executive produce film and media projects, primarily helmed by women. She also co-founded Chicken & Egg Pictures to support women nonfiction filmmakers
