Hotchkiss Wins Top School Award at Recent Debate

The Hotchkiss Speech and Debate Team did very well at its home tournament on Sunday, Oct. 20. Over 120 debaters from schools around New England came to Lakeville on Sunday for two rounds of parliamentary debate and two rounds of impromptu speaking. Hotchkiss won the Top School Award as well as a number of individual and team awards. The highlight was captain David Vega’s victory in the Advanced Overall competition. David ’20 has qualified for the World Championships in Shanghai in April.

In both parliamentary debate and impromptu speaking, at the novice and advanced levels, Hotchkiss speakers did an outstanding job. Among the novices, Stella Ren ’22 won top parliamentary debater, top two-person team, and second place overall novice speaker. Alec Stern ’23 (in his first debate) won third place novice two-person team in parliamentary debate with his partner Arhan Chhabra ’22. Alec also won third place in impromptu speaking and third place overall novice speaker. Beatrice Conti ’22 won first place two-person team and second place individual speaker in parliamentary debating and first place in impromptu speaking, as well as first place overall novice speaker.

At the advanced level, in addition to Vega’s individual awards, he and his partner Alex McLane ’20 won the second place two-person advanced parliamentary debate prize. Teammates Tong Zuo ’20 and Annabel Wallace ’21 took third place in two-person advanced parliamentary debate.

As a team, the Hotchkiss debaters went 12-0 in parliamentary debates and finished in first place. Debaters included David Vega, Alex McLane, Annabel Wallace, Tong Zuo, Ein Jun, Stella Ren, Ilene Park, Beatrice Conti, Arhan Chhabra, Alec Stern, Kasen Mo and Jason Shan. Advanced debater Jiahua Chen supported the team by serving as a judge for novice debates. The team effort was impressive and follows up on the team’s first-place finish at the Roxbury Latin Debate Tournament at the start of the year. The team is busy preparing for their next debate at BB&N in Cambridge in December.

In addition, Hotchkiss will co-host the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition in Boston, MA, Thursday, Oct. 31 - Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019. Beatrice Conti, David Vega and Tong Zuo are scheduled to participate.
