Postcards from Lakeville: Student Artists Create an Homage to Campus Botanicals
Postcards from Lakeville

By Catherine Calame

The current exhibition in the Hotchkiss rotunda, The Real Prayers Are Not the Words: A Collection of Botanicals, is more than just a display—it's a celebration of student observation and artistic response. One specific project, titled Postcards from Lakeville, features 90 original pieces of artwork created by students across three different classes:

  1. Prep Humanities: Studio Art & Ceramics
  2. Lower-Mid Humanities: Studio Art
  3. Portfolio

Students in the Architecture I course curated the selection of work and participated in the installation process.

Young artists were challenged to create work directly inspired by the native flora found on the Hotchkiss campus, which is well-known for its pastoral beauty in Connecticut’s picturesque Taconic Hills.

Students were encouraged to observe natural forms, colors, and textures and translate them into personal, expressive works of art. The added element of presenting all of the works as one cohesive unit was an interesting challenge for the student curators in the Architecture I course. They thoughtfully selected the final pieces and were directly involved in the installation process, helping to create a cohesive and impactful exhibition for all to enjoy.
