Speech and Debate Team Finishes Fall Season in the Winners Circle

The Hotchkiss Speech and Debate Team capped off the fall season notching another victory in the final Debating Association of New England Independent Schools league competition.

By winning the Dec. 5 tournament hosted by the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA, the team the team swept all of the parliamentary and public speaking competitions in the league this fall.

More than 100 debaters from 15 schools competed in Parliamentary Debate and Impromptu Speaking at BB&N with Hotchkiss earning theTop School award. Co-captain Beatrice Conti ’22 won the Top Overall Advanced Speaker Award and qualified for the World Championships. This is the third time Conti has qualified for Worlds in her Hotchkiss career.

The team won with a balanced effort once again, with the Advanced and Novice debaters contributing. In the Novice Division, Peter Berlizov ’24 finished as the Top Overall Novice Speaker, Third Place Novice Debater and Third Place Novice Impromptu Speaker. Isaiah Stevens ’25 was the First Place Novice Impromptu Speaker.

In the Advanced Division, Co-Captain Rahul Kalavagunta ’22 was the Third Place Advanced Impromptu Speaker and he and his partner Conti were the First Place Advanced Parliamentary Pair.  Erin Jun ’22 and Ben Who ’24 finished as the Second Place Advanced Parliamentary Pair.  In addition to winning the Top Advanced Overall Award and the First Place Advanced Parliamentary Pair, Conti also won the First Place Advanced Parliamentary Speaker Award. She has earned a spot at the WIDPSC World Championships to be held on line this April, hosted by the Country Day School in Toronto.

The team will kick off the new year competing against Choate Debate Tournament in January.
