Five members of the Hotchkiss Speech and Debate team competed in a public speaking tournament at Kingswood Oxford School on Sunday, Feb. 4, during Long Winter Weekend. For the first time since 2007, Hotchkiss won the Top School Award.
Students participated in three events: persuasive speeches, impromptu speaking, and dramatic reading. For the second week in a row, co-captain Meilan Antonucci ’24 finished as the overall top speaker (he was also the top advanced speaker at the Choate tournament on Sunday, Jan. 28). In addition to the overall title, Meilan won first place in persuasive and third place in dramatic reading.
Competing his first public speaking tournament, Max Salzinger ’24 was the third place overall speaker and finished in second place in both persuasive and impromptu. Maadhavan Prasanna ’24 also competed in his first public speaking tournament and finished as the third place impromptu speaker. Parth Jain ’24 and Peter Berlizov ’24 contributed to the team’s victory with their strong showings in all three events.
Kingswood-Oxford is the first of two public speaking tune-ups before four debaters, including Maadhavan and Meilan, head to Canberra, Australia, for Worlds in April with Ben Who ’24 and Isaiah Stephens ’24. The whole team will turn its attention to debating as they prepare for a parliamentary debate tournament at St. Sebastian’s School on Feb. 10.
